This is the Extra Aircraft display. On the right is the familiar Extra 300L. On the left is the decidedly less well known Extra 400. The Extra 400 is a six-place all-composite, pressurized, piston single-engine airplane. The prototype was built and flown in 1996 and the first production plane was built in 1999. To date, some 30+ of the type-certified aircraft have been sold.
In January of this year, Extra Flugzeugbau GmbH went into insolvency. The company is now under new ownership and management. The factory in Germany has been reopened. Under development at Extra is the the Extra 500, a turboprop derivative of the Extra 400. At Oshkosh this year, the new company management said certification of the Extra 500 is expected in late 2003 or early 2004.
I hear cheering coming from the direction of the flight line so I'm off to find out what all the excitement is about.
